What is a doula?
Birth doulas support families through the life-changing experience of having a baby. We are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible (DONA International). We encourage mothers and partners to advocate for themselves by providing them with the skills to do so.
For a more comprehensive look at what a doula is and is not, I suggest reading this article and discussing it with your partner.
Hey there, I'm Britni :)
I am a doula based in St. Louis, Missouri. I am a Certified Birth Doula through Childbirth International. When I found out I was pregnant with my oldest, I did a lot of research about the different care options in our area.
I was surprised by the variety available and also how little people knew about them. Most of my mom friends had no idea that midwifery was an option or that they had the right to change care providers if they were uncomfortable. It set me on a path to learn more about how to advocate for myself and for our little family to find and receive the care that we wanted.
It was a journey in which we often felt alone. At the time, I knew very little about doulas. But a passion for birth and supporting women during their pregnancy and labor had begun. After the birth of our oldest I realized not only how important having a doula would have been for us, but also how this was a service women desperately need.
I knew that becoming a doula was the next big adventure for me. I am passionate about women having support on their birth journey and receiving accurate, unbiased information to help them make decisions for themselves and for their families.
